A wide, fine-sand urban beach in the town centre, facing SSW and partly sheltered by the harbour pier, which filters heavy Atlantic swell into milder, longer waves suited to longboarding and beginner surfing. Swimming and surf zones are kept separate. Kitesurfing and land-sailing are prohibited here. A quicksand area on part of the beach is closed off. At very high spring tides the sand can disappear almost entirely, concentrating waves near the seawall.
