Reading the swimming forecast.
For open-water and wild swimming, the water itself is the forecast. You want low chop and gentle wind so the surface is swimmable, manageable current and tide — strong tidal flow or rip can move you fast — and, above all, a water temperature and quality you are prepared for. Cold water is a genuine hazard without acclimatisation or a wetsuit, and after heavy rain many coasts and rivers see storm-overflow spikes that make swimming unwise. Sheltered bays, lidos and calm mornings are the friendliest conditions.
4Shor scores swimming around water state, current and temperature at each spot, so calm, mild, low-chop days rank highest and rough or cold conditions are marked down — split by ability so cautious swimmers see only the gentle days.
New to swimming? Start in sheltered, calm, milder water, swim parallel to shore, and check the tide and recent rainfall before you get in.

Frequently asked questions.
How does 4Shor score swimming conditions?
4Shor builds a score from the seabed up. For swimming, we combine satellite-derived bathymetry, wave models, wind data, tides and water temperature into a single 0–100 conditions score calibrated to your ability level — Beginner through Expert. A score of 80+ means Excellent (90+ Epic!); 65–79 is Good; below 45 the session is usually not worth the drive.
What swimming ability levels does 4Shor cover?
Every location is scored across four levels: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Expert. The same beach can score 75 for a beginner on a small clean day and 30 for an expert when there isn't enough power. Pick your level in the app and the score adjusts automatically.
Where are the best swimming locations in Europe?
4Shor ranks more than 2,500 swimming locations across Europe every day — from the Atlantic coasts of Portugal, Spain, France and the UK through to the Mediterranean and Baltic. The rankings above show today's top performers by live conditions score. The list changes daily as the forecast shifts, so the best spot depends on when you're going.
What conditions are ideal for swimming?
Ideal open-water swimming is calm, low-chop water with light wind, gentle current and a temperature you are prepared for — sheltered spots on a mild, settled day score best. 4Shor's ShorSense™ engine models all these variables — seabed shape, wave energy, wind direction and tides — and translates them into a single 0–100 score for your ability level, updated every hour.
Can 4Shor provide more accurate forecasts than my existing app?
Current forecast apps only provide swell, wind and tide data and in many cases expect you to do the analysis yourself. 4Shor goes the extra mile — we model how waves will break and build that into our forecasts to allow us to create conditions scores for your chosen water sport and skill level – something that no other app does.
What's the science behind 4Shor?
4Shor uses ShorSense™ — our coastal intelligence engine that combines satellite-derived bathymetry (fancy word for underwater mapping), advanced wave models with wind and tide data to generate precision, hyper-local forecasts.
Is it really a free trial?
Yep. Both Premium and Pro come with a 7-day free trial. You get full access for 7 days, then decide if the sessions saved are worth the price of a post-surf burrito.
I am a beginner, is 4Shor for me?
Absolutely. Whether you're chasing your first green wave or doing your first kitesurf body drag, 4Shor helps you choose the right place at the right time for your sport and ability. Think of it as a smart local who knows when it's mellow enough for learning and when it's time to sit on the sand and watch.
How do I get 4Shor?
