Conditions guide

Reading the windsurfing forecast.

Windsurfing lives on wind strength and steadiness. For most sailors that's a reliable 15–25 knots — enough to plane, not so much it becomes survival. Direction relative to the shore decides how safe and rideable it is: cross-shore and cross-onshore are the sweet spot, drifting you back to the beach rather than straight out to sea. Gusty, hole-y wind is far harder work than a steady breeze of the same average, and a little chop or swell adds bump-and-jump fun once you're comfortable.

4Shor reads the wind at each spot — average strength, gust spread and its angle to that beach — and combines it with water state to score how good a session will actually be for your level. A 20-knot cross-shore day scores high for an intermediate; light, shifty 10 knots barely registers.

New to windsurfing? Start on steady 12–18 knot cross-shore days over flat water — enough to plane, gentle enough to stay in control.

Frequently asked questions.

How does 4Shor score windsurfing conditions?

4Shor builds a score from the seabed up. For windsurfing, we combine satellite-derived bathymetry, wave models, wind data, tides and water temperature into a single 0–100 conditions score calibrated to your ability level — Beginner through Expert. A score of 80+ means Excellent (90+ Epic!); 65–79 is Good; below 45 the session is usually not worth the drive.

What windsurfing ability levels does 4Shor cover?

Every location is scored across four levels: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Expert. The same beach can score 75 for a beginner on a small clean day and 30 for an expert when there isn't enough power. Pick your level in the app and the score adjusts automatically.

Where are the best windsurfing locations in Europe?

4Shor ranks more than 2,500 windsurfing locations across Europe every day — from the Atlantic coasts of Portugal, Spain, France and the UK through to the Mediterranean and Baltic. The rankings above show today's top performers by live conditions score. The list changes daily as the forecast shifts, so the best spot depends on when you're going.

What conditions are ideal for windsurfing?

Ideal windsurfing is a steady 15–25 knots blowing cross-shore over manageable chop — strong enough to plane, angled so a rest still drifts you home. 4Shor's ShorSense™ engine models all these variables — seabed shape, wave energy, wind direction and tides — and translates them into a single 0–100 score for your ability level, updated every hour.

Can 4Shor provide more accurate forecasts than my existing app?

Current forecast apps only provide swell, wind and tide data and in many cases expect you to do the analysis yourself. 4Shor goes the extra mile — we model how waves will break and build that into our forecasts to allow us to create conditions scores for your chosen water sport and skill level – something that no other app does.

What's the science behind 4Shor?

4Shor uses ShorSense™ — our coastal intelligence engine that combines satellite-derived bathymetry (fancy word for underwater mapping), advanced wave models with wind and tide data to generate precision, hyper-local forecasts.

Is it really a free trial?

Yep. Both Premium and Pro come with a 7-day free trial. You get full access for 7 days, then decide if the sessions saved are worth the price of a post-surf burrito.

I am a beginner, is 4Shor for me?

Absolutely. Whether you're chasing your first green wave or doing your first kitesurf body drag, 4Shor helps you choose the right place at the right time for your sport and ability. Think of it as a smart local who knows when it's mellow enough for learning and when it's time to sit on the sand and watch.

How do I get 4Shor?
