The sandy beach break works on mid tides with north-easterly swell, suiting beginner and intermediate surfers, plus kayaking, canoeing and kitesurfing; groynes are the main hazard. RNLI lifeguards patrol 10am-6pm in summer, backed by a year-round volunteer lifeboat. Cliff-backed walkers can be cut off by the tide. Dogs are banned from the promenade 1 May-30 September.
