Europe's best watersports destinations

Europe packs an astonishing range of watersports coastline into a short flight: Atlantic power on the west, thermal-wind machines in the south, and sheltered flat water almost everywhere in between. These are nine spots worth travelling for — and, just as importantly, the sport and season that make each one sing.

1. Tarifa, Spain — the wind capital

2. Peniche & Ericeira, Portugal — surf central

Portugal's west coast is a swell magnet, and this stretch catches it from almost every direction. Ericeira is a designated World Surfing Reserve; nearby Peniche offers beach breaks for every level. Best for surfing, September–April.

3. Hossegor & the Landes, France — powerful beach breaks

The heavy, hollow sandbars of southwest France draw surfers from around the world every autumn. Serious waves when it's on — and long stretches of quieter beach for when it's not. Best for surfing, September–October.

4. Fuerteventura & Lanzarote, Canary Islands — year-round

Warm water and reliable trade winds all winter make the Canaries the go-to European escape when the mainland is cold. Sotavento in Fuerteventura is a flat-water and freeride classic. Best for kitesurfing, windsurfing & surfing, October–April.

5. Tenerife & El Médano — thermal reliability

The acceleration zone around El Médano delivers some of Europe's most consistent windsurfing and kiting, with warm water and a laid-back scene. Best for windsurfing & kitesurfing, most of the year.

6. The Greek islands — sea-breeze machines

The summer Meltemi wind turns spots like Rhodes, Naxos and Kos into dependable thermal playgrounds, with warm, often flat-ish water and a holiday atmosphere. Best for wind sports, June–September.

7. Sardinia & the Italian coast — variety

Porto Pollo in Sardinia is a famous wind funnel with flat lagoon water, while quieter bays elsewhere suit paddleboarding and sea kayaking on calm mornings. Best for wind sports & flat-water, May–September.

8. Cornwall & the UK Atlantic coast — home swell

You don't have to fly far. Fistral and the north Cornwall coast pick up consistent Atlantic swell, with a thriving scene and beaches for every ability. Best for surfing, autumn & winter.

9. The Scottish & Irish coasts — wild and uncrowded

For the adventurous, the north and west of Scotland and Ireland offer world-class, empty waves and dramatic scenery — cold, remote, and unforgettable when it lines up. Best for experienced surfers, autumn & winter.
